From Control to Flow:
A Nervous System Approach to Releasing Perfectionism
Have you ever noticed how life feels harder when you're trying to control everything?
Like you're constantly swimming upstream, exhausted from the effort of making things "perfect"?
I get it.
A few years ago, I was caught in this exact pattern.
Despite everything looking great on paper, I felt like I needed to supervise every aspect of my life with military precision.
No room for divine timing or synchronicities – just pure, exhausting control.
The Hidden Cost of Control
Here's what nobody tells you about perfectionism and control: they're actually trauma responses wearing a productivity mask. When we don't feel safe in our bodies or trust life's natural unfolding, we grip tighter, thinking that control will protect us from pain or disappointment.
But here's the truth: the more we try to control, the more we:
Disconnect from our intuition and inner wisdom
Stay stuck in survival mode, unable to access our creativity
Miss life's natural opportunities and synchronicities
Exhaust our nervous systems with constant hypervigilance
The Spiritual Paradox
The universe has a funny way of teaching us lessons. The moment we try to control everything is usually when things start falling apart. Why? Because control is the ego's attempt to play God. It's our small self saying, "I know better than the divine plan."
But what if the chaos you're trying to control is actually trying to lead you somewhere better?
Your Body Knows the Way
The key to breaking free from control patterns isn't in your mind – it's in your body. Your nervous system holds the patterns of perfectionism, people-pleasing, and procrastination. When we learn to regulate our nervous systems and create internal safety, we naturally begin to trust life more.
How I've come to become a perfectionist is through experiencing abandonment in my childhood & I see this pattern play out in my clients with similar backgrounds, too. When we experience a break of trust early on in our development, we learn to believe that who we are, how we are & our needs are insignificant therefore we need to contort ourselves to be worthy of validation & love.
We forget our divine nature & begin to read & manage our environment with hyper-vigilance as we simply do not trust that we'll be taken care of otherwise. Like we always have to be one step ahead, thinking & analysing our way through life.
But think about it: when do your best ideas come? Rarely when you're stressed and trying to force them. They come in the shower, on walks, or just as you're drifting off to sleep. That's your nervous system in a regulated state, allowing flow to happen naturally.
From Control to Flow: A New Way Forward
The path from control to flow isn't about adding more tools to your productivity arsenal. It's about:
Understanding your body's stress responses
Building internal safety and trust
Embracing uncertainty as a portal to possibility
Exchanging nice-ness (proxy to the "good girl") to kind-ness as a core value
Key Takeaways:
Control patterns often mask deeper fears about safety and worthiness
Your nervous system holds the key to releasing perfectionism
Flow states require trust in life's natural unfolding
Internal safety must precede external surrender
